How to Access VR Experiences on Applied Science Commons
Mental Health in VR and Video is a collection on the Applied Science Commons platform. It features hundreds of short-form, skills-based videos and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experiences designed for teaching and training in counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, and related fields.
These experiences can be explored on nearly any device—a desktop computer or laptop, mobile phone, or fully immersive headset—giving learners and educators flexibility in how they engage with the content. All VR titles are hosted in partnership with Uptale, ensuring a seamless and accessible viewing experience across platforms.
Supported Devices
You can experience Applied Science Commons VR content on a range of devices:
Desktop or laptop: View directly in any modern web browser, using your mouse or trackpad to rotate and navigate the 360° scene.
Tablet or mobile browser: Use touch gestures to explore interactively.
Mobile headset (e.g., Google Cardboard): Insert your phone into a compatible headset for a more immersive view.
Advanced HMDs (VR headsets): Enjoy full immersion on supported devices such as Oculus, Pico, or other head-mounted displays, using the Uptale app.
How to View a VR Experience
Follow these quick instructions to experience VR content on your preferred device:
View on desktop or mobile browser
On Applied Science Commons, you can open VR experiences directly in your browser (desktop or mobile). No special equipment or software is needed.
- Go to appliedsciencecommons.net
- Log in or register with your institutional email address.
- Click Modules at the top of the screen.
- A page will open showing all the modules you have permission to access. Select the Mental Health in VR and Video module.
- On the Mental Health in VR and Video home page, enter your search term in the search bar in the middle of the screen (e.g., anxiety).
- Filter by PUBLICATION TYPE on the lefthand side by clicking VR Experience.
- In the list of search results on on the right, click on the VR experience you want to view.
- Click View.
- The experience will open in a new tab in 2D mode, hosted by Uptale.
- Use your mouse, trackpad, or touch gestures to rotate the scene, and click on hotspots to interact.
View in HMD (head-mounted device) or a VR viewer for smartphone
Experience the content in full VR using a head-mounted device (HMD) or a VR viewer for your smartphone.
- Go to appliedsciencecommons.net
- Log in or register with your institutional email address.
- Click Modules at the top of the screen.
- A page will open showing all the modules you have permission to access. Select the Mental Health in VR and Video module.
- On the Mental Health in VR and Video home page, enter your search term in the search bar in the middle of the screen (e.g., anxiety).
- Filter by PUBLICATION TYPE on the lefthand side by clicking VR Experience.
- In the list of search results on on the right, click on the VR experience you want to view.
- Click Watch in HMD.
- A new tab will open with a single-use six-digit access code.
- Follow the instructions to download the Uptale app.
- Once Uptale is downloaded, click "Play an experience" and enter the 6-digit code. The code is active for 30 minutes after opening the experience.
